HUGE shout out to our sponsor, Kepros Physical Therapy & Performance!

Virtual Programming News

We are live with virtual trivia games – we’ve learned Zoom is reliable… FB Live is not. When internet demands are high with so much quarantine/social distancing, we simply don’t know when it’ll work. So check the Facebook page for Zoom links – I will add here as much as I can! They’ll be updated to the Social Distancing page for Trivia, Outdoor Adventure prize drawings, and any Virtual Socials. Events on the Public Events page that have to go to virtual gatherings *should* get updated on that page as well. Join us and help us spread the word!!

It’s Flocking Fun has taken off with a lot of excitement here in the Cedar Rapids area. We are excited to share we have “Flock Managers” who will support the cause by offering flocking for our campaign in MORE CITIES! Austin, Texas (Alex Johnson/brother); Allen, Texas (north of Dallas, Liz Aggarwal/sister); Des Moines, Iowa metro (Grace Wormley/friend/U of Iowa student); St. Louis, MO area (Joe Haefner/friend). Check out the options for the city near you… or your family/friends… surprise them with a flock! In Cedar Rapids, we are excited to have an add-on option of Easter Eggs with candy – while supplies last (and they’ll last a while… about 1,000 eggs!).

Thank you for following along. Thank you for your support. THANK YOU!!!! Please share!

Full-Steam… into Socially Distancing?!!

Hello, supporters! I have been quiet for a few weeks. As everyone can’t help but know, the pandemic that is upending life as everyone knows it is having super real impacts. Its impact on this effort is no different. You may ask WHY?? we are going forward with it now… because we ARE… and I don’t blame you for wondering. Instead of answering with a fabulous reason now, I instead implore you to join us Thursday evening at 8pm (CDT) for a “Why Now?” trivia game. This is free to attend, happens right after our state kicks off this campaign, and will hopefully shed light on why we must go on! Cancer patients need us… LLS needs us. I hope you will join to learn about what LLS does and why it’s as important now that we continue forward.

What has changed?

Everythings!!!!!!!! Of course. The last few weeks have involved just about every emotion in the book… yes, this post is far more raw than I ever planned to share here. Because it’s REAL. Covid-19 is very real. The impact it is having globally is heartbreaking-ly REAL. But what has NOT changed… but is still just as REAL… is my why. My niece still battled cancer last year. She still has lifelong scars because of it – damage to her heart, no spleen, and who knows what else that could surface. Chemo is rough. It is harsh. It is all she had. Science hasn’t caught up with the times for treatments for children. LLS is working to change that.

Why not NEXT YEAR? Because kids like her can’t wait. Their cures can’t wait. Their treatments can’t pause for a year. They need us TODAY. My heartache seeing what cancer and the treatments available did to her is NOT changed. My motivation to make the biggest impact humanly possible for her is NOT changed. My goal has NOT changed.

My sweet boy (10 years old) is on my team because of his love for his cousin and heartache for what she went through. He told me we HAVE to win this. I told him that my goal is actually NOT to win…. he was stunned… until I explained: My goal is to reach (exceed) my goal for our team (>>>$100,000) …then “lose.”… …. … that means another woman in Iowa ALSO raised that magic number. Afterall, everyone wins when cancer loses… so let’s lose!!

So back to the campaign… What has changed?

Again…. Everythings!!!!!!!! No but really… after a week or so truly grieving the loss – accepting that this campaign would not play out how I had dreamed and planned and worked so hard for since October… we got working. My team is working hard… we still are and will be!

Socially Distanced Fun!!! – check out the new web page on this site! It’s a work in progress because we are still developing more. We want to engage every person we can reach the friends of our friends’ friends’ friends! Our goal is to offer opportunities for kids and adults to engage, interact, mix it up, get outside to move… all while adhering to the CDC guidelines on social distancing and any stricter state requirements! After all, we can’t keep cancer patients safe if we aren’t doing our part!

Trivia – kids (daytime) and adult (evenings)…. Outdoor Adventures including Eye Spy and Scavenger – programs for the Cedar Rapids area AND “Anywhere”… and Virtual Socials.

How did I end on Virtual Socials??? That’s FIRST! Our big kickoff virtual social is Sunday April 5 at 3pm. Check the Socially Distanced Fun and/or Public Events tabs for details. Though we will live stream on Facebook, you do NOT have to have a FB account/login to watch. Do you wish to chat with us to share your WHY? Email me for the Zoom link.

End? Just kidding…

Please click to follow this blog/site. We have a few more fun virtual opportunities up our sleeve and this will be a prime way to be in-the-know. Plus, as in-person events near, we will be updating here with any new events, postponed dates, or cancelations. Stay in the loop!

Thank you for following. Thank you for reading. Cheers to you. Be WELL!

Shirt Pre-Sale Ending, New Events, and More Tickets!

T-Shirt Pre-Sale Ending Soon!!!
Help us spread word of the campaign by WEARING it! Wearing your shirt at events will also get you a bonus raffle ticket. Have I mentioned we have 8 tropical vacation resort donations that will be making their appearances in raffles?? On top of that, we have an incredible variety of gift cards, experiences, and even kids entertainment. You’ll have choices of raffles at events, so add to your chances to win something great.

Order your shirts and/or drawstring bags here from Ironside Apparel through March 9! They will then be printed following pre-sale and if you opt for organizer pickup, I will have those at events from kickoff forward.

Check out the 4 shirt colors too – choices, choices! These sales benefit LLS as well, since they will help fun campaign expenses.

New Event Tickets Added!
Why buy tickets in advance? Lower cost than at the door! Plus, it’ll help us in planning so we have enough food, drinks, and space!! Finally, we know we are packing a lot of fun into a short span of time with this 10-week campaign, so we also want to allow for spreading those donations/expenses out across more time. SO….

Get your tickets to the fun events we’ve been working hard to plan. There are sure to be at least a COUPLE that everyone can enjoy.

Newly added:
Kentucky Derby Party & Silent Auction at Della Viti Saturday May 2 {ages 21+}
Kids Glow for a Cure Party at Regis Middle SchoolSaturday May 16 {all ages}
Volleyball & Bags Tournaments at GameOn Sports CRSaturday June 6 {adults}

There are more ways to support this campaign!! Thanks to a group of University of Iowa students, there will be a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday April 18 in Iowa City. This is sure to be a hit, so don’t miss out!

The amazing U of I students scheduled a fundraiser in Des Moines at Kendra Scott on Saturday April 4 as well, which will help fund the pancake breakfast. So be sure to stop out at Jordan Creek and find that something sparkly for you or a gift!

Chili fans? Be sure to join us Saturday May 9! In addition to the Scavenger Hunt and After Party at Thew Brewing, we are now hosting a CASI Chili Cookoff!! This means we are inviting competitors from all over – many travel from out of state! – to cook and present their chili. In addition to turning in their award-winners to the judging panel at the set time, they’ll then open up to public tasting. For a small donation to LLS, you can purchase a small tasting cup and sample them all! Tasting ends when the chili runs out. Stay tuned for exciting details for this fun addition. This will all take place just west of our awesome supporters, Thew Brewing!

If that’s not enough, we will add even more fun to the Saturday May 9 list of events with an all-day Tips for LLS Challenge! Thew Brewing is hosting this guest bartending fun where we will have pairs competing throughout the day for tips. So come out… when your friend, or coworker, or neighbor… is pouring and tip them for the win! Sodas will be available for donations and all tips will go to LLS!!

Last, but certainly not least – LLS leaders in Des Moines schedule and host a couple fun events each year as well. There will be a Poker Tournament (Saturday April 4) and a Old School Kegger, complete with food and drink; both happen in the Des Moines area. Join the fun, tell them you’re there supporting my campaign (each Man or Woman of the Year candidate invites their friends and family!), and have a blast! I hear the prizes are amazing too for the poker tournament!!! I will add details to this site as they are available.

Be sure to check out the Public Events page periodically for any updates as well.

Campaign Shirts Pre-sale & Event Tickets!

Happy Tuesday! I have a few news items to share!

Campaign T-Shirts!!!

I am excited to share that our campaign t-shirt presale is now open! This is a great way to support our cause from an early start because the proceeds from shirt sales will directly support the campaign through donation to LLS and event expense support.

Shirt and bag orders will be open for just THREE WEEKS! so place your order HERE today!!! Order before March 10 (9am); I will pick up all pre-orders on about March 31 and will have them at events for pickup. You may opt to ship or store-pickup your order as well, though they will still not be ready until the end of March. This is to allow Ironside Apparel to bulk-order based on pre-sales to keep the costs down.

Why get a shirt?

Wear your campaign t-shirt at events and get a bonus Raffle Ticket! Nearly every event will have more than one raffle item, so wearing your shirt earns extra chances at exciting prizes.

Event Ticket Pre-Sales

Links for event tickets have been added to the following events on the Public Events page and linked here:

Brews Tours & Music at Lion Bridge Brewing Company – Wednesday April 15 | {ages 21+}
Morning at the Movies at Collins Road Theatres – Saturday April 25 | {all ages!}

Why Pre-Register?

Advance ticket purchases will help us to plan for the crowds! With over a dozen events in a 10-week span, we don’t want to miss a beat on being ready to make each experience worthwhile. We certainly don’t want to run out of food or drinks, and for the movie event, the more we pre-sell, the more screens and movie choices we will get!

If you’re bringing a group, please feel free to reach out to me as well. I am happy to reserve space for you personally.

What is this all about?

Thank you for visiting this website! I am so excited you are here and I hope this helps you understand what this is all about.

I am leading a team of friends and family that is driven to find cures for blood cancer, and support the Mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Because I am all about “go big, or go home,” the team has quite a big goal set to raise during the 10-week campaign. Every dollar we raise counts as one vote for me. The candidate whose team tallies the most votes earns the prestigious title of “Man or Woman of the Year“.  But let’s be real… it’s not about the title.

My why: my niece was 11 when she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in June, 2019. She is now recovering from a brutal fight, that included more tests, taps, scans, treatments, and miserable days than any child should endure, including missing an entire summer of adventure and the first half of her first year of middle school. She may get to hear the word “cured” if all continues well; she returned to school after Thanksgiving, but with permanent heart damage, without her spleen, and without hair… and still, her costs of cancer aren’t the same as so many. I am working to fight for the day that she and ALL blood cancer patients will be CURED. Many diagnoses have much lower cure rates and that isn’t ok. For her, for the children representing the Iowa Chapter of LLS, and for all who will face a fight against blood cancer, let’s do this!

Everyone wins when cancer loses. Thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers.

Many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.

We really are getting close to our goal of a world without blood cancers!

So why the website? My incredible team has helped make it possible for us to host about a dozen fun events. We will offer fun for all ages; family-fun events and adult time too!

So much thought and care has gone into each event so that the donation attendees make to participate provide more than the great feeling of helping the cause. Your donation will include things like food, drink tickets, a raffle ticket, live music, and SWAG bags (vary by event). Nearly all events will have great packages for those raffle tickets, including kiddo fun, food and drink, experiences, and tropical vacation resorts!

When are these exciting events? The campaign officially kicks off on April 2, 2020… so hold your excitement (and generosity!) until that date. It concludes with the Grand Finale gala celebration in Altoona on Saturday, June 13. The events we have planned for all of you kick off on April 2 and conclude just before the gala.

Why is this going live so early? Our team will soon be rolling out some exciting things so we are ready to hit the ground running on April 2. We will have campaign apparel available, which will come with exciting incentives and help fund campaign activities; we will have advance registration opportunities to both give us an estimate of attendees to make it the best for you, as well as allow for schedule planning.

How can you stay in the know? Click the option to “Follow this Campaign!” You will get notified when news of events rolls out, as well as when the campaign officially launches and is ending. Follow the campaign on Facebook as well at https://www.facebook.com/EmilyWOY2020 – please interact, engage, and share! That will help our team maximize our reach!

How can you help? Share this site, register to join our exciting events, follow on Facebook, provide any feedback you can! We are still adding sponsors for our events, as well as for the Grand Finale, so any suggestions or support is welcomed. We are working with a great local company to offer our apparel, which will include the logos of our sponsors as well!

Please visit my website often and tell friends who would also like to have some fun while supporting an amazing cause.

On behalf of blood cancer patients everywhere, thank you for your support! For more information about LLS, please visit http://www.lls.org

If you’ve read this far, THANK YOU! If you scrolled down and scanned to this point, THANK YOU (but don’t miss the “follow” option above!)! I am beyond excited for this incredible challenge and to make the absolute biggest impact I can, with the help of all of you. Cheers!
